One of the emerging options to store energy is using SAND as its core storage materials.

Any excess electrical energy, previously just thrown away, is used for resistve heating of air and passed through sand which then holds this heat energy for months.

Great for those long Finish winter months.

Working with a small power plant in the town of Kankaanpää in western Finland, Polar Night Energy has erected the first sand battery on a commercial scale. Filled inside a tall grey silo are about 100 tonnes of sand used in construction, a relatively inexpensive alternative to the lithium, cobalt, and nickel needed for other batteries.

Polar Night continue to work on scaling up and improving efficiencies when converting the hot liquified sand for home and water heating. But better than throwing electricity away at any efficiency.

The energy can be used as an alternative to expensive peak load or when the supply power is down. No wind, sun or power plant shut down for maintenance.
