There are around 200,000 Glaciers around the world. At the present rate we´ll loose around half by the end of this century
What I hadn´t fully appreciated was just how critical these Glaciers are to human kind. Approximately 2 billion of our 8 billion planetary inhabitants are dependant totally or in part for drinking water, food and energy (hydro). Particularly vulnerable is Pakistan, Northern India and Bangladesh. Here, to give a perspective around 500 million, yes, say again 500 million are dependant on the run off from around 15,000 glaciers in the Himalayas.
Most think its ´just another 6 inches on the sea level´ or tough luck on the ski resorts but think again.
Here is a great 12 minute you tube video from Dave Borlace backing all this up with reference articles and facts
These 500 Million or so people living to the south of the Himalayas rely on the run off from the glaciers in the high Himalaya mountains for the irrigation of the food they need to survive and clean drinking water.
Glaciers each melt and freeze at a previously predictable and usable rate which millions rely on.
It seems now the glaciers rather than being a sustainer of their lives it is now their biggest threat. Why ? starvation yes, lack of drinking water ?, yes, but the new massive threat is that the run off is no longer a manageable flow - it is now a literal tsunami of mud and water destroying homes, businesses and food crops.
Are we talking a hundred displaced people - no. A million displaced people - no. An estimated 33 million people were displaced. Equivalent to over half the UK population.
Did it make it onto the western news channels - No. Do take a look at this excellent 10 minute you tube video from Dave Borlace HERE. showing actual footage from Pakistan.
