I am increasingly aware that the use of ´Net Zero´ claims based on Carbon Capture and Carbon Credits that lack credibility. I used to think them a good thing. Not anymore!
Many claims seem to be just propaganda and cause true green transition delays. Net zero is good content for the ESG part of company shareholder reports. Or just warm words to cover for the ongoing huge investments in Oil, Gas and Coal. Polluting Investments that make actual green energy investments insgnificant.
These arguments and tactics are similar to those the cigarette manufacturers used for most of the last century, with huge spend on advertising, PR, reports from (bent) authoritative bodies and individuals and so on to promote how good smoking is for our health. Just change smoking for oil, gas and coal. You get the idea.
Rather than contrive a net zero sum isn't it just better not to create pollution in the first place?
Here´s analogy.
Lets suppose the 85 million barrels of oil we burn every day are bags of flour. You open them and pass them to your 2 year old and let them loose in your houses.- Now you have to clean up your houses. Using a tea spoon. The teaspoon is analogous to carbon capture and net zero claims.
85 million flour bags are the 85 million barrels of oil a day. That´s about 31,100 million barrels of Oil (or flour) to clean up every year.
Net zero and Carbon Capture is not a realistic option.
There simply is no way other than to stop the burning of oil, gas and coal.
Carbon Capture Video. This great 15 mins you tube video by Rob Lewellyns´ Fully Charged team showing the many and varied proposed methods of capture, showing the amounts of CO2 that they capture are astoundingly small when compared to the true magnitude of the 36billion CO2 tonnes per year problem we face. They are also expensive and largely unproven at scale. It also tilts towards how carbon capture is a key part of the green wash strategy of big oil and gas and its plans to extend our addiction to oil, gas and coal. Click Here
Carbon Certificates Podcast. A podcast by Redefining Energy showing the reality of carbon certificates and insights into their useLets suppose the 85 million barrels of oil be burn every day are bags of floor. You open them you let you 2 year old loose in your houses.- Now you have to clean up your houses. Using a tea spoon. The teaspoon is analogous to carbon capture. misuse and perpetration of CO2 net zero false claims, particularly over the last 20 years. More importantly it explains what is being done to stop this devious practice. One answer proposed is using blockchain digital certificates. Thus realistically reflecting the true use and cost of the CO2 when it is actually used. Click Here.
The volumes of CO2 predicted to be captured using this range of techniques with their significant additional financial costs clearly shows carbon capture is not viable and that the only real alternative is to stop burning these hydro carbons in the first place.
And to stop burning as fast as our world economy, geo politics and lifestyle can bare.
Our politicians remain largely uneducated to this reality. Even willfully blind.
Big oil, gas and coal guys remain committed to petroleum and gas. Their green speak is largely just that goals and aspirations with no time line. They are still spending way more on oil and gas research, development and new assets than on renewables. They talk a seemingly convincing renewables case but their actions suggest otherwise, with no serious commitment to the transition away to renewables. They seem to be using their vast financial and other resources to keep their customers addicted to oil with misleading or plain wrong information. I saw on oil major company had invested 3 billion in renewable and 80 billion in oil and gas research and development.
Big Oil keeps ´sweating its assets´. No one gets promotion from stranded oil coal and gas assets. One of the bigger big oil and gas wheeze is to use the carbon dioxide they create making petroleum and pump it in to existing oil wells to maintain the pressure needed to keep oil flowing. Here is the real kicker.. And also claim it as carbon offset.
Be on the look out for Oil states and Companies pushing CO2 capture as they have many empty underground caverns they have emptied of oil and would love to fill them with CO2 as it would be another revenue stream. Just ask how much it CO2 it captures compared to the 36,000 million tonnes burning oil, gas and coal produces every year.
Another big oil and gas wheeze is to capture at the source of manufacture. Ask what part of manufacture, a part they usually omit and be aware the technology is expensive and largely unproven at scale. Why not use green electricity .. move the wind farm next to the factory or the factory to the wind farm .. you get the idea. This move the factory and energy together is one I hope will catch on as far as possible.
A few carbon capture cases may exist during the energy transition period where CO2 capture may be of planetary benefit, but these are rare.
36,000 million tonnes of CO2. Sounds a big number? Why, because it is!
We continue to put the Carbon previously captured by our planet over a period of approximately 300 million years back into the atmosphere at an astonishing rate.
In short 300 million years worth of CO2 capture returned to the atmosphere in just 200 years, from when the Industrial Revolution really get going.
Our atmosphere and climate simply cannot cope.
The only true decarbonisation strategy is to stop burning.
